University of Queensland Press is Queensland’s largest publishing house. UQ Press publishes a wide variety of books, including children’s and young adult fiction, adult fiction, poetry, memoir and autobiography, as well as adult non-fiction.
Emma completed an Editorial Internship at UQ Press in 2016. During her time, Emma worked with the senior editorial staff on a wide variety of projects. Emma was involved in the editing process for two full-length manuscripts – a memoir and a children’s fantasy novel. Emma was responsible for proofreading the memoir manuscript, checking proofreading changes, and drafting the back cover copy. With the children’s novel, Emma completed a copy edit and a proofread, as well as provided the editorial staff with structural feedback.
Emma also completed several reader reports. Emma read manuscripts from existing UQ Press authors and assessed their suitability for publication. This involved examining the manuscript’s plot, characters, themes, voice, tone, style and marketability among other things.
Working with Queensland’s largest publishing house has given Emma the experience and skills required to succeed as a freelance editor.
